Chapter 14

Chase

NO MATTER HOW MANY rum and Cokes I chugged down, I’d never find Ashley attractive. Sure, the girl wasn’t bad-looking. In a plain sort of way. But, her personality was a mix between a frat guy and a tween who wasn’t that keen on personal hygiene. Her breath was rough and her hair hadn’t been washed at least in the past couple of days. Her clothes had this stench to them as well. A smell I couldn’t place, and a smell I didn’t want to place.

It was only a smell I wanted to get away from.

“I could just kiss you right now, you know that?” Ashley asked.

“Please, don’t,” I said.

She giggled. “You are so funny, you know that?”

And when she leaned in to kiss me, I managed to twirl her around. My hands fell to her hips and she began gyrating into me, dragging her nonexistent ass all along my crotch. I rolled my eyes and tried my best to enjoy it. I swayed my hips to the rhythm as I slowly guided us over to the edge of the dance floor. I dodged her want to turn back around. I spun her and led her along the outer edge of the floor, evading her lips at every turn.

“Oh, I could dance with you all night,” she said, groaning.

Then, the heavens above parted and granted me reprieve.

“You stay right here, handsome,” she said, as she bopped my nose. “I just need to take a quick bathroom break.”

“I’ll be on the lookout,” I said.

She giggled as she flounced off, swaying her hips, supposedly for my viewing pleasure. But I didn’t watch for long. I sighed with relief as my freedom coursed through my veins, but soon I felt a hand slip into mine. I looked over and saw Mel smiling up at me. I had to swallow my grumble of disappointment as she pulled me back out into the middle of the dance floor.

Exchanging one woman for another, and neither of them were the woman I wanted my hands on.

I looked back at the women’s restroom line and saw it wrapped around the corner. Fucking hell, Mel would have me for at least four songs. I looked over at the table where Mira was sitting and saw her staring at us with a fire in her eyes. I longed to be next to her. My heart reached out to her. I hoped she could hear my mind crying out to be next to her even as her sister tried pulling me into her arms.

Then, Mel’s slurred words pierced the fog of the bass booming in the club.

“How are you liking dancing with another woman?” she asked.

My eyes whipped down to Mel and I saw the glassy stare of her eyes looking back at me. Shit. She was drunk. Which meant I’d be responsible for getting her home.

“What?” I asked.

“Dancing with another girl while I’m—”

She hiccupped, and I forced us to stop moving.

“What? You don’t wanna dance?” she asked.

“I’m not enjoying this at all, Mel,” I said.
